Dongming was a small town, and Ding Shuben suddenly brought in so many people,so rent and grain prices were very high in the city.
Ding's people were all people from Hebei, which means the north of the yellow river. when I check the map, my grandpa's so called Hebei is now part of HeNan province. Dongming , now in Shandong province, was a county of PingYun province, and one of 5 counties in the namely territory of Ding Shuben.The city had city walls made of earth. outside the walls were waters of 1 meter deep and 100 meter wide. local commies, including my grandpa's unit, were ordered to attack Dongming. usually they crossed yellow river after dark and approached the city at night. the shoot in the city and Ding's people shoot back. either side had big guns. later on, If KMT's big army like Qiu Qingquan were far away, the local commie was bold enough to dig in and settle outside the city. Ding's people also came out of the city to attack commies. there were battles every now and then, but neither side could really hurt their enemy. this lasted at least many months.
one day commie's big army with large guns began to cross the river and Ding found his city besieged by many tens of thousands of commies. explosion of those guns rocked for at least 24 hours and most of Ding's people died, the rest were captured, including Ding himself.
Ding was taken away. other captured were not so lucky. people were just arrested if their accent sound HeBei. the judge(yes, commie had a judge,he seemed to have power to dercide who should be killed), who was so cruel and killed so many people, and even his commrade commies were horrified by him.My grandpa didn't remember the Judge's name.My grandpa said"We all call the judge Er Yang Gou(yang Gou means foreign dog ). He is famous for executing too many people and his eyes were like a vicious dog's."
