A New Theory of Origin of the Human Species

Presented in this article, for the first time, is a simple and directed theory of the bio-evolutionary origins of the human species for the consideration of specialists and informed laymen alike, with a challenge to anyone who might want to raise issues on the basic generalized framework of the thesis, as opposed to its details, which, of course, may require fine tuning as more cross-disciplinary evidence emerges.

The approach, as might be expected, is multi-disciplinary. The backbone of evidence, however, is from the cultural anthropological data, especially as it relates to material evidence of the spelean institution of the Fertility Cult in pre-historic times, and the singular cross-cultural personality and function of the shaman in human societies.

A valid theory of the bio-evolutionary origins of the human species cannot skirt around the salient features of human biology, namely neoteny, and the biological and cultural traits associated with it in the human species. Evolutionary theorists relying heavily on the standard adaptationist model, which seeks to explain human biology primarily in terms of the requirements of survival in a primarily hunting-nomadic and foraging society, have so far preferred to explain away these salient aspects of human biology and culture as incidental non-adaptive products, probably of genetic drift or some other obscure mechanism best known to them. Steven Pinker, in his How The Mind Works, for instance, argues that since it is not reasonable to assign an adaptive function to all species traits, we may overlook those apparently non-adaptive traits of human biology as the product of chance events in human bio-evolutionary history. The traits, in question, are the intellectual traits of the human species associated, not exclusively, with our ability to utilize leisure, especially in arts and entertainment: Music, dance, drama, literature, fantasy, philosophy, scientific thought, religious behavior and beliefs, fine arts....

The analysis of relevant evidence begins with the examination of the origins of human sexual dimorphism. It is widely held that the earliest human societies were small nomadic hunting and gathering groups. The pronounced sexual dimorphism of the human species could be readily explained as having arisen in response to the heterosexual courting behavior of human male. The female could have grown her trammeling secondary sexual characteristics, in a nomadic hunting and gathering society, only in response to the willingness of the male to share the hard won proceeds of the hunt in return for the female's sexual favors. One need not elaborate in defense of this thesis. The aspect of human heterosexual behavior in which the female tends, cross-culturally, to trade sexual favors in exchange for economic gain is too well documented.

The immediate impact of the emergence of pronounced sexual dimorphic traits in proto-human species appears to have been the development of the sedentary-agricultural lifestyle as valid alternative to the nomadic-hunting-and-gathering lifestyle. The origin of the sedentary lifestyle, which finally spawned the agricultural technology based historic civilization, was in the special opportunities afforded by the circumstances of the female dominated homestead. The willingness of the male to provide for the female and her offspring allowed her the leisure which led to her acquisition of an alternative homestead culture. The invention of the homestead could, of course, only have limited the wandering of the nomadic male.

The pivotal idea to the thesis being developed in this article is that human biology is better reverse engineered in terms of the circumstances of a sedentary lifestyle rather than a hunting-nomadic lifestyle. It is proposed here, for the first time, that the ancestors of the Human race were the relatively juvenilized members of prehistoric hunting bands who, being unable to cope with the psychic stress associated with the militarized lifestyle of the hunting band, dropped out of the band and adopted the alternative homestead based sedentary lifestyle of the females. The material evidence of the alternative lifestyle, cultivated in the female homestead, is preserved in the cave art culture of prehistoric man in the Mediterranean world at such famous locations as Lascaux, Altamira, Niaux and Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc.

It is suggested, in this article, that the factors of natural selection which led to the emergence of the neotinzed hominid, Homo sapiens, had played out, not primarily in the hunting grounds, but in the circumstances of the homestead environment; and only secondarily on the hunting grounds. The distinguishing traits of the human race with specific reference to biological juvenilization, and its associated psychological traits, had not been primarily in adaptation to the requirements of a hunting-predatory or foraging lifestyle but to the relatively mild homestead environment elaborated into the institution of the prehistoric Fertility Cult, material evidence of which we have scattered all over the Mediterranean world, especially in southern France. A non-hunting leisured class appears to have emerged early in pre-historic proto-human society. This class could only have justified its keep by the profession of magical-religious powers. In hunting societies, in historic times, for instance, shamans help hunters to procure game by releasing the souls of animals from the underworld origins presumed to be the womb of the earth-as-mother. This explains why magical sexual rituals are an important aspect of the culture of the Fertility Cultus. We see evidence of a pre-occupation with magical sexual rites, for instance, in the "Salle du Fond" painting, of Paleolithic origins, showing a shaman-sorcerer crouching over the pubic triangle of The Mother in apparent symbolic enactment of the mysteries of nature's generative powers.

The array of ethno-graphic evidence suggests that the institutionalization of the office and function of the shaman, in Paleolithic human society, could easily have reoriented the forces of natural selection in favor of the homestead based male. The circumstances of sexual ritual based sedentary life style, in the magical-religious culture of the Fertility Cult, might have turned the forces of sexual selection in favor of the male who stayed at home and became society's shaman-king. The domestication of the male shaman-king would afford him greater access to the females. This allowed him to pass more of his genes to the next generation. Vatic-shamanic personalities thus exerted a greater influence on the course of human evolution than their relative numbers in their populations would ordinarily have allowed.

One might consider that the vatic-shamanic personality represented, in bio-genetic terms, the vanguard-arrowhead in the process of biological neotenization of the human race. It would appear, from circumstantial evidence of the widespread myths of the incestuous mother-son pair, in the ancient Mediterranean world, that mother-son incestuous rituals were an aspect of the magical-ceremonial culture of the prehistoric Fertility Cult. We know that inbreeding helps to concentrate and increase the frequency of the genes associated with a genetic strain of a particular population.

The salient aspects of human psychology, especially the human susceptibility to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Neurosis, and the associated tendency to religious-philosophical defense mechanistic fantasy, in the face of ego anxiety, can best be understood in the context of the theory that throughout the development of human biology, shamans, as opposed to macho warrior-hunters, contributed disproportionately to the human gene pool. In relatively primitive societies the office of the Shaman and the King is merged. Historical figures like the Prophet Mohammed are illustrative of the archetypal shaman-king functionary of human prehistory. The separation of the role of shaman and king occurred in historical times. In pre-history and early history the shaman was the king and the king was the shaman. In traditional societies, shamans and witchdoctors usually form an influential leisured upper class caste who amass wives and concubines and reproduce disproportionately relative to the population of fighting men.

What has been termed the "vatic-shamanic personality disorder" is primarily a pattern of psychoneurotic reaction to the stress and strain of living. It involves a set of symptoms associated with the inability of the individual to cope with the psychic pressures of everyday living, and this may be associated, especially in highly militarized cultures, with the problem of fulfilling culturally defined gender roles in the masculine gender professions of hunting and soldiering. This phenomenon had been widely studied in Native American societies under threat of genocidal dispossession by European immigrants to the "New World." The transvestite shaman has also been extensively studied. He has been described by Weston La Barre, in his Ghost Dance, as the "not-male" male; that is, the male who at maturity effectively rejects his masculine gender identity associated roles and seeks refuge in the assumption of feminine gender identity. He stays at home with the females, while the men go to war. Magical powers are ascribed to him, and he functions in the office of a medicine man, witch-doctor or shaman to the fighting men who have assumed their appropriate gender roles and identity.

As already hinted, the roots of the historic institution of the Divine King, especially in Africa, was in the institution of the cave dweller's Fertility Cult. The constitution of the Fertility Cult in historic times sheds light on its constitution in pre-historic times. The Fertility Cult is what came to be known in Christian Europe as the Witches' Coven.
