Is it just us or do relations with China seem like they’ve been cooling incrementally throughout the year? Temperature on the Sino/ US Lovefest Thermometer dropped a few more degrees on Friday when President Obama called on China to release Liu Xiaobo, currently a political prisoner in China who won the Nobel Peace prize today.
But isn’t the only one China finds itself at odds with today. Not only does China not want to release Xiaobo, but they’ve condemned the Nobel Foundation, and indeed the country of Norway itself for bestowing the honor on Xiaobo. China denounced the Foundation’s decision, saying it was “completely counter to the principle of the prize and is also a blasphemy to the peace prize.” Liu Xiaobo won the Peace Prize for his outspoken advocacy for human rights, transparency and democracy in China.
In addition to its anger with Norway, the governments of Taiwan and France have also condemned China’s stance. France’s Foreign Minister voiced approval for the Nobel Foundation’s decision, saying “This decision embodies the defence of human rights everywhere.”
Hm, maybe Christine O’Donnell is on to something after all? With any luck, the reformed witch is indeed completely crazy, and China’s chilly relations with the international community will not result in direct conflict.
But if the economic scarcity of the recession parlays into a doomsday global war for resources, this will surely become a new top reason to move to Canada, who as usual, has stayed largely out of this debate.
这下关了个大麻烦
放了吧
