This Week: "Young & Restless in China" (120 minutes),
Tuesday, Jun. 17 at 9pm on PBS (check local listings)
Live Discussion: Chat with producer Sue Williams June 18, 11am ET

Today, no country bears watching more than China.

In the 21st century, China's economic and political development will have a huge impact on all lives. Where will its great experiment combining capitalistic economics with a Communist government lead the world's most populous nation? One clue to that future lies in the hopes and dilemmas of China's next generation.

In this Tuesday's FRONTLINE broadcast, "Young & Restless in China," producer Sue Williams takes an intimate journey into the lives of nine Chinese young people in their twenties and thirties as they navigate their way through a society that is changing at breakneck speed. We meet young entrepreneurs and migrant factory workers; a businesswoman caught between her family's desire for a baby and her own career ambitions; a young woman searching for her mother who disappeared when she was a child, sold into sexual slavery; a medical resident struggling with an under-funded health care system; an environmental lawyer battling the overwhelming impact of industrial pollution; even a young rapper looking for his big break.

Producer Williams, who made two previous major documentaries in China (including the 2003 FRONTLINE, "China in the Red"), began filming this new project in 2004. She followed her characters over the next four years as they struggle with their professional and personal lives in a country caught between its cultural traditions and the promise of a bright prosperous future.

The result is a remarkable portrait of the opportunities, pressures and contradictions of life in China today, but also a vivid portrait of what it's like to be young: the intense search to discover who you are and what you will do, and to find the one you will love and build your life with. If you're like me, watching this film will bring back the memory of those years, with both a wince and a smile.

As you follow the dramatic twist and turns of these young Chinese lives, you'll get a fresh perspective on this vitally important country, perhaps to be impressed by its dynamism, troubled by its neglect of important problems, curious about its culture and traditions, surprised by its idealism, and left wondering what its future holds for its people and the rest of us.

We hope you'll tune in Tuesday (6/17) for this classic example of documentary filmmaking. And then, explore our Web site where you can watch the program again online and learn more about the featured characters and the making of the film.
