回头看这20来年的中国，用一个现成的政治学术语概括之，是学术界的一大挑战。
中国是资本主义吗？为什么资本主义的核心的东西（公平，自由交易，代议制）一概没有，而雇佣歧视，垄断行业，如此普遍？
中国显然不是老牌的社会主义国家了。那么，中国到底是个什么东西的国家呢？

In2002, I speculated that China may be something we have never seenbefore: a mature fascist state. Recent events there, especially themass rage in response to Western criticism, seem to confirm thattheory. More significantly, over the intervening six years China’sleaders have consolidated their hold on the organs ofcontrol—political, economic and cultural. Instead of graduallyembracing pluralism as many expected, China’s corporatist elite hasbecome even more entrenched.
Even though they still callthemselves communists, and the Communist Party rules the country,classical fascism should be the starting point for our efforts tounderstand the People’s Republic.
