Last weekend I was at the lake of Hempstead. A guy with a binocular was excited telling me that he spotted some redhead ducks. I had never seen redhead and looked around finding none. There are plenty of greenhead ducks everywhere and the brick-red-head duck seems a rare variant of duck species.
It is estimated there are 1 million of them in north America, that mainly reside in the West and South. In the east, it is not so common.
I spent a day today to find them. Didn't see one in the reserver of the central park. I went to Hempstead.
I found them. They seemed quite shy and never come close to shore. They are different from the greenhead ducks in which they dive for food, while the greenhead only immerses its head in the water and leaves its butt well above the water.
THe pic below was shot at a distance of about 60 meters and I am glad that they were focused.

Another unexpected event I saw today in the lake was that the swan that is believed to be gentle and graceful was actually rather aggressive. They fought the others for no apparent reasons to me.

When I was at home, the moon came out, 94% full at the Christmas night on this day of 2007, not 100% as I predicted several days ago.
