Gloomy day outside. Went to Scranton, the electrical city of the glory past, Yesterday. That was not my destination og original interest though. I wanted to see bears at the west side of Wallenpaupack Lake of 13 miles long from north to south, in Peen state. The east side were full of private retreat areas. Driving along route 447 on the east side of the lake, hit #6 made a left turn then I was on 509. I was a little disappointed that I didn't see a bear along bush lanes where I was circling.
I stopped by a small ice cream shop. I said to the girl inside: Where i can see the bear? she pointed for me: "You can get a iced pack 2 miles up there". I knew I didn't pronounce correctly. I said again: the mountain bear, not the Heineken beer, I am sorry.""oh," She knew what I was looking for this time:"There is zoo somewhere ...", "No, I mean the wild bear." She replied"I don't know, I never go out."
Well, this is Penn State, wide and wild but you can hear a lot of stories about bears but hard to see them. I saw one in Catskill of NY, a baby. Some one told me that there was a lot of bears around this area, Not when I was here.
OK,I was driving along and looking around and got lost. In a tiny town, where in Penn I guess any place where there is 10 houses that can be called a town, I saw a sign "Scranton, 16 miles".
Scranton once was a thriving city because of the coal industry and it was deserted after using oil instead. I went straight into the downtown. Not many people there. There was a huge mall though.
Outside the mall, there was a long long line of people outside, most of them are teenage girls. And to my surprise,in this city there were virtually no blacks, no Latinos and absolutely no Chinese with the exception myself. All of them were whites, old or young, male or female. The line were made of pony tail whites, from 10 year old to 17, I reckoned.
I went into the mall to discover why there was so many waiting in the line. It was so crowded, I hardly could make my way through. I Heard the thrillingly screaming with joy, clapping and laughings.
There was a stage. a white young girl sitting in the middle was doing the calligraphy. She must be a famous star here at least and I didn't know who she was.
In Scranton, there was a university and when I was on my way there, I saw another one called "Stroberger Uni" if I remembered correctly. "MIT graduates can find a good job in NY city colleges", I was thinking "a NY city college graduate also can find a good position in these places".
Well, I concluded my trip for the day after a cold coke. i went to a wrong place again when I was on my way back to NY. I asked a guy coming out of a car that how i could be back to the highway for NY city. He was from Maryland. You don't have such luck to hit a lotto this days. He was very helpful, putting a cigarette into his mouth and took a map out from the driver side. He spent about 10 minutes to find how I could on the right track back to NY. I knew that, just go to high way 80. He was still not able to tell me how to get there though.
But we are guessing together and It was me who found it: in order to go to the south to hit 80, you got to head to the north 5 miles. Not logical, but it worked.
