M.I.T. Dean Who Resigned Has a Degree After All

In an odd twist to an already strange story, Marilee Jones, the former admissions dean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who resigned last week after admitting that she had lied about her academic credentials, turns out to have a bachelor’s degree, but not from the institutions she had named on her résumé.
Instead, M.I.T. officials said, Ms. Jones earned a B.A. in biology at the College of Saint Rose, an independent college in Albany, where she grew up. Officials at the College of Saint Rose confirmed that they had awarded a bachelor’s degree to a Marilee Jones in 1973, when Ms. Jones would have been 21.
Ms. Jones has been unavailable for comment since her resignation.
Last week, in announcing the resignation, the institute said Ms. Jones, who achieved national prominence for her efforts to make the college-admissions process less stressful, had falsely represented herself as having degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Albany Medical College and Union College.
The institute said Ms. Jones had not listed the College of Saint Rose on her résumé, either when she first applied for a job 28 years ago or in more recent biographies. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College were on her original résumé; Albany Medical College was apparently added during her tenure at M.I.T.
Last week, M.I.T. officials said that when Ms. Jones was confronted about the false information, she was given a chance to present other credentials but did not do so. Even if she had, an M.I.T. spokeswoman said yesterday, it probably would have made no difference.
“At a place like M.I.T., it is about the integrity,” the spokeswoman said. “I can’t see a scenario in which anything would have changed.”
Ms. Jones’s college degree was reported yesterday in The Boston Globe and The Albany Times Union. The Times Union said it had received an anonymous tip about Ms. Jones’s attendance at the College of Saint Rose.
