what is really intranslatable yet transmittable if the translator makes no attempt holding on to the falsehood of meaning.

Translation is the artistry of a blind painter.

A good artist can hear and smell and touch- not merely see.

A good translation, is one where the artist has, by chance, stumbled upon colors that blend well (choosing his paint by flavor) while flailing his paws all about the subject. He hums a tune of his own creation, and in madness and vanity creates something altogether different from the original, but good in its own right:

he may grasp some of the same things the original grasped at, but

must always fail it.

Two impromptu translations done in haste:

被我遗弃的女人

The Babe I left behind

The babe I left behind

has silksoft skin and dreamy eyes

long braids and sigh like night falls.

I am the man she turned away

now alone in the chill of autumn air.

babe, the boy who takes your hand

is no different than I

babe, you left me

and you take my longing with you

braided on tips of your hair

bloody clear dancing with the wind.

babe, I diserted you

I am the only man that

you can turn away with pensive loving stare.

*你笑起来,酒窝好圆

Your dimple is so full when you smile

Your dimple is so full when you smile

like the torrent in the high sea

swirling dead body entangled with long hair.

Your eyes are so red when you cry

Red as if on fire

and streams of fountain gushing through.

That's your tears?

salty, bitter like the sea foams

touch a drop,

send me straight to hell.

Then you took out a napkin

wipe out teardrops

yesterday's love

with that soiled paper tower

dropped in the waste bin.
