Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez may not have made a lot of friends in the Bush administration with his UN speech yesterday, but he sure sold a lot of books for Noam Chomsky.
Twenty-four hours after Chavez used Chomsky's book Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance as a visual aid in his speech, the book was selling like hotcakes on the internet.
Since the speech, the title has risen to No. 4 on the Amazon.com best seller list, up from 20,664 before the speech, and to No. 7 at Barnesandnoble.com, up from 748.
Later in the day, though, it began to slip back down the lists.
Chavez, who called Bush the devil, urged UN delegates to read the Chomsky book, which argues that the US is carrying out "an imperial grand strategy" in its military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In the aftermath of the address, 10 copies of the book were sold at the UN Bookshop in the General Assembly Building in New York, according to Leticia Acosta, the bookshop manager. That's as many as are usually sold in a two-week period at the store.
At Revolution Books, a communist-affiliated store in Chicago, staff members were delighted at Chavez's mention of the Chomsky book but chagrined to realise it was out of stock, said bookseller Lou Downey.
"We just re-ordered it as soon as we heard the speech," he said.
