Nationalism is usually mixed with other forms of ideology. The American nationalism is closely associated with the liberal ideals of freedom and democracy and the Nazi nationalism was associated with the superiority of the German race. Then it is natural for the Chinese nationalism to be associated with loyalty to the imperial court doesn’t mean it is not nationalism. YueFei’s 滿江紅 is a perfect example of that--It expresses his loyalty to the Song imperial court, but also his almost racist zeal to beat back the barbarians and recover the Chinese Empire .
European historians consider the French revolution as the beginning of the rise of nationalism. However, in terms of nationalism, what is the difference between the Peloponnesian war of the ancient Greece and the Austrian-Prussia war and the subsequent Franco-Prussia war in the 1800’s? Only the scales differ. The point is that nationalism exists all along, but in Europe, it was checked by the rise of the universal church in the middle age. After reformation, nationalism revived. In fact, one can even say that nationalism was a principal force behind the reformation--Luther translated the Bible into German and German nationalism rose after that.
The historical wars of the Chinese fought against the barbarians are nationalistic wars, reflecting a Chinese nationalism based on cultural identity and their way of life.
