新大陆是西方地理大发现中哥伦布首先发现的，不过他却以为是印度。意大利学者亚美利哥证实那是一个前所未知的大陆，因此命名为亚美利加洲。后来在这片土地上建立起了今天的世界强国——美利坚合众国。率先来到这里为今天的美国打下基础的是一些“道不行，乘桴浮于海”的分离派清教徒，在登陆之前，他们达成了这样一个协定（五月花号公约）：
以上帝的名义，阿门。
我们，下面的签名人，作为伟大的詹姆斯一世的忠顺臣民，为了给上帝增光，发扬基督教的信仰和我们祖国和君主的荣誉，特着手在弗吉尼亚北部这片新开拓的海岸建立第一个殖民地。我们在上帝的面前，彼此以庄严的面貌出现，现约定将我们全体组成政治社会，以使我们能更好地生存下来并在我们之间创造良好的秩序。为了殖民地的公众利益，我们将根据这项契约颁布我们应当忠实遵守的公正平等的法律、法令和命令，并视需要而任命我们应当服从的行政官员。
看着这短短的文字，我真的很嫉妒美国佬的幸运——他们的这群先辈中间竟然没有“先知”（或者其他名义的绝对权威）！于是彼此可以在上帝的面前以庄严的面貌出现而不会有一些人比其他人更庄严。可以想象如果他们和出埃及记里面的犹太人一样有摩西那样的先知彼此不会平等；如果他们是英王派出开辟殖民地的肯定也不会平等，因为至少会有英王任命的总督。可都不是，命运此时对他们格外垂青，他们是平等的！
这群彼此平等的受压迫者用短短的协定揭示了政治社会存在的理由和基础：是为了社会中人更好地生存由平等的社会中人约定组成的。所以，他们的法律法令不是“摩西十戒”，他们的长官不是“君权神授”，而是因为社会中人的需要并且要体现个体的平等。自然，如果这些法律法令和行政官员不能使个体的生存环境更好甚至损害个体的利益就必须废除的，并且人们有废除的权力。这种当时极为先进的观念在新大陆的居民中传承，让他们的后人在专制统治损害到自己利益时奋起抗争，最终建立了一个独立民主的美国并且一步步走向强盛。
现在的人们如果不满自己的处境去“适彼乐土”是很难的了。除非有星际大发现向外星移民，否则选择国家的机会实在很小。人按照自己的要求选择国家的机会虽然很小，却绝对拥有选择自己政府的权力！
公民的这种权力在今天看来应该是常识了，可是我们这片古老大陆上的人有多少意识到自己有这个权力并且行使了呢？“新大陆”网站的创办，应该可以让更多的人知道自己的权力进而知道如何行使。感谢“新大陆”网站，感谢她的创办者们！

The Mayflower Compact (November 1620)
IN The Name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, &c. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honor of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first colony in the northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due Submission and Obedience.
