"Sniffology" ABC: for Jia Ren's private notebook
芦笛
I made up this word for Lao Jia's "wen (to sniff) xue", as my English is not good enough to translate the name of this new discipline of science. Last night I slept for just a bit more than 2 hours and today is a big day. So I am sure this piece will be full of mistakes like the previous ones. For example, in yesterday's piece, I wrote "in the midnight" rather than "at midnight". Unfortunately for me, 9th Sys did not stand out to correct me. What a shame!
Now about the gist of this "sniffology". What I am trying to say here is to teach people like Plus Slave how to decide whether a piece is worthy of reading.
As I said before, there are two schools of writers that are active in the BBS. One is "pedantic school" and the other "popular school". Writers of the former school normally write pieces like jigsaw, consisting of loads of names of giants, famous quotations, etc. Their works are normally very difficult to understand. Ordinary people look at them in awe, feeling that they are incredibly clever, uttering something so difficult to comprehend.
You cannot say these readers are totally mistaken. If you go read works by great thinkers like Kant or Hegel, you will find them very difficult to understand as well. Naturally, the first response of the reader who runs across the pedantic writers' articles is that they must be reincarnations of those giants.
Very unfortunately, this is not true. A stupid nation, the Chinese will never produce giants like Kant and Hegel in the foreseeable future. So the rule of thumb here is very simple: if you read something from the Chinese BBS that you cannot understand despite your repeated effort, then it is the author, not you, who is the idiot.
Actually, there are two kinds of writers of this school. The "strong point" of the first one is "elaborating fuss using enormous amount of knowledge", or more simply, "cracking a nut with a sledgehammer". What they say is not incorrect or incomprehensible, but is so trivial that nobody would give it a damn, were the idea put in plain language.
Writers of the second kind normally write something they cannot understand themselves. Their brains are just like what you normally see in a place hit recently by a hurricane. Everything is in great chaos. So not only did they not understand the meanings of the quotations abundant in their "articles", but they also cannot sort out the random "thoughts" of their own. If you threatened them with a knife, saying: I'll kill you if you do not put your thoughts in plain language, I bet they would still be unable to do it, simply because they lack the ability to think properly and express themselves in a reasonable order.
I guess this is enough for today's lesson. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. Remember, I am your master. So I cannot reject any request from you.
