Some observations:
In modern worlds, with modern means of government, dictators can effectively maintain their status for a logn time; anf they can effectively reformat a race's mind. Things like Peasant rebel can hardly work now without strong outside help. Examples: North Korea, Cuba, etc.
In this sense, freedom can hardly be obtained by just "fighting you to death".
The possibility that this fighting will fail is too big with doctators acquiring more and more powerful crushing down tools.
However, few dictators will gran freedom in the expense of risking his
status, if they don't have to. Deng's reform might partly be due to his
recognization of Mao's absurdity; but maybe he might more intend to
save the economy and their dictatorship because he knew it was at the brink of "bankruptcy". He could easily take back whatever he granted.
In other words, democracy may be "granted"; but not freedom.
What's granted will stay under athe granter's mercy for a long time.
He can grant it to you, and he can take it back.
It's up to him.
It can hardly be said "freedom".
Freedom first, democracy follows. The hardest part is to get freedom.
Only a race with most people holding the faith that "would rather die if no freedom" may deserve freedom and democracy, I guess.
Chinese is not such a thing.
Every Chinese may start with this: don't bow to any bully; don't bully the weak and poor.
More people have such a spirit, more hope for democracy.
What's compromise? It's most possible to achieve betreen strong ones.
A wolf does not need to do that with a goat.
Only strong people deserve it, maybe.
But I don't know. Character of a race may change under government. Look
at South Korea and North Korea. Korea is not a race that's easy to lower its head, but under Jing's force, it's changed to be so mean and so dosile. It's kind of a miracle.
I am not optimistic. Freedom may be just a dream for most people in next 100000000 years.
