This tropic is too complicated to analysis here as there are already deep studies by State Department.
Consolidating the comments by international economic scholars and bankers recently published in Financial Times, it is concluded that the appreciation of reminbi within 10% will not do any harm to China or any good to US. However, the action will release US government to pacify the public on the outcry of Chinese invasion.
Politically, it is desirable to revalue the reminbi for the building up of the relationship with US. But, it must be done on the assumption that America should have something in return. Our President, Mr.Hu should demand several major concession by US before taking unilateral action to revalue. I would suggest to include the Taiwan issue,the arm embargo,transfer of aerospace technology which China is ways behind.
I think our Chinese government is doing the right thing in the correct direction. It is better to let the Americans keeping on asking for revaluation and let them waiting for the outcome. People can see now China has the control card in hand and the status of China has never been so high.For the time being, we can demand major concession from US under the table. Then, at the end, we appreciate the reminbi and the world will be very pleased to recognise that China is a responsible country and be willing to take up hardship for the others.
