There was definitely no rigorous definition of infinitesimals back then. Just read the wiki article on non-standard analysis. It states this fact very clearly by Robinson:

However, neither he nor his disciples and successors were able to give a rational development leading up to a system of this sort. As a result, the theory of infinitesimals gradually fell into disrepute and was replaced eventually by the classical theory of limits.

Like I said before, they use the naive concept of infinitesimals in freshman calculus, but it is all very vague and makes no mathematical sense.

This is the real problem with the discussion here. Everyone is throwing up nonsense about infinitesimals, but they can't pin down what they are. Can anyone give me a rigorous definition of infinitesimals here? The fact is that everyone is repeating Marx's mistakes simply because they were deliberately mislead (for good pedagogical reasons) in their freshman calculus classes.
