I don't think that the photo itself is offensive; the photo is a record for the situation then. What makes the post offensive is Mr. X-ray's comment.

There is a one line footnote: ... soldiers "SOLEMNLY" collect......; I don't remember the original sentence, but the word SOLEMN impressed me.

Showing repesct to dead is a moral issue in most cultures. During the cold war, the US tried to explore a sunk soviet nuclear sub; the Navy observed tranditional Russian ritual to treat any cadaver during the exavation.
