hooded mergansers, the punky duck belongs to this category. It's extremely punky in shape as you can see it on the left side of the following photo:
They are paired most of the time. This is evident as shown:
Based on the majority of wild birds, the attractive or colorful one is usually the male. Thereby, a conclusion can be drown tentatively that the punky duck is female. Further study should be done to ascertain the statement. That is, to observe the riding posture of each other, which can be made possible in the spring time.
