If Adobe Acrobat is installed, things will be easier to covert a .doc file to .pdf file. You either use the PDF button on the Word toolbar and save the file as the pdf format, or you can use File|Print and then choose Acrobat Distiller as the printer and then save the file.
Unfortunately, Adobe Acrobat is not free (I did not find a free one, Adobe Reader is free). But we can use another way to convert a .doc file to .pdf file.
Save file as PostScript format. This can be achieved by: File|Print, then check the box labeled Print to File, and save the file as .ps file or save the file as .prn file and then rename it to .ps.
Convert PostScript file to PDF file. This can be achieved by: Open the .ps file using GSView, a graphic interface of GhostScript, which is an interpreter for PostScript page, and then File|Convert and select the pdfwrite device, then save to a .pdf file. GhostScript and GSView are needed in this step. GhostScript and GSView are free to download from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/. or other sites.
