Let nobody's eyes at midnight peep
Into your secret's very depth,
Where not until the farthest star
Has turned its head are you willing
To open inward, fold by fold,
The snow-white of your compound petals
And at the impassioned climax reveal,
To me, oh, to me alone,
The privacy of your startled pistil,
A dazzling cluster moist with powedery gold.
What an inviolable miracle, what a shame
To have closed too soon to see daybreak!
But such a destined night of encounter
Between the mortal and the immortal
Was well worth the wait for centuries
And merits rememberance forever anew.
