game way back in the mid-70s, the last time they played in germany, also as defending champions, they played with a very rigid style, no flair, no imgination, and overwhelmed by the dutch. they picked up the european game again in late 80s after tele santana, who passed away lately, failed in 2 attempts. they would have won it at italia90 had it not gone horribly wrong in the game vs argentina, during which they did everything but score.
meanwhile, santana was achieving sth with the traditional brazilian style by guiding sao paolo to two libertadores cup triumphs, and as a result, beating milan and barcelona in tokyo. however, brazil needed world cup not flair, so they went to carlos alberto peirrera, the current coach, and the rest is history.
what i feel sad is, world cup as the ultimate dream for football fans has become a cash cow, a means for sb's private agenda, and footballers no longer play off but show off. look at the decisions made at this world cup, you can avoid having the impression that the favourites have been pampered.
not that all the decisons have been blatant and biased all the way till now, though the that's the general idea, for me at least. they wanted to have a nice quarterfinal, and they got it.
