The big assumption is that adding the ping-pang ball onto the balance is not using the balance per se.
1) Then you can add two balls once at a time simultaneously on the both sides of the balance. If there is an imbalance after you added two balls, put these two aside. For the descriptive purpose, making them A and B respectively. One of them (A or B) must be defect.
2) Then you unload the balance but leave one ball on one side and put A on the other side. If the balance inclines to either the 'A' side or the other, you have the answer.
3) Else, you can replace A with B for the answer.
